Gerald "Tommy" Thompson

Gerald Thompson was born on 4 October 1886, in Carnarvon, Cape Province, the son of Gerald P T Thompson.

Played as a Hooker/prop for: Rondebosch High school, Western Province

SA tour of UK and France 1912-1913.

War service: 3744 Private, 5th Regiment, South African Infantry, East African Expeditionary Force. He enlisted on 16 October 1914 and was taken on strength by his battalion on 5 December 1915. He was hospitalised with malaria in March and April 1916.

He was killed in action on 20 June 1916, at Katanga, East Africa, and is buried in the Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania. The inscription on his grave reads:
