William Shum, his father, came to South Africa from Scotland to build the railway line at the Point in Durban. The 2-mile stretch of line between the Point and Durban was opened on 26 June 1862. It was the first railway line in South Africa. Ernest Hamilton (known as Baby) was chosen as a forward for the 1012-13 tour to the UK, Ireland and France, playing in only the England test.
