Floors Duvenhage : Doc Craven

Like Gerrie Brand he was an introvert, although not averse to the odd prank or two. I don't think I ever saw a centre as fast as Floors Duvenage. With that body swerve of his he could cut through any gap and he scored tries of the kind that most rugby players only dream about.

During the war years I commanded a battalion of youngsters and Floors Duvenage was the first player I grabbed to help me.

The boys hero-worshipped him - he was such an amazing performer.

We had Denis Shore in the same battalion - the then South African sprint champion, and during numerous athletic meetings they ran in the same event. Floors would often have to look over his shoulder to find out where Denis Shore was. That will give you some idea of how fast he was.

Floors also had natural ability as a soccer player and one day, playing in the same team, I saw him score six goals at centre forward. Floors could have represented South Africa in any sport had he so chosen - certainly at soccer or athletics. One of our most versatile sportsmen.
