A product of Stellenbosch University, van der Westhuizen is another utility member of the team. Though not brilliant, he is a very effective wing, and at full-back very sound. He has been the mainstay of the Stellenbosch team during the 1931 season both in attack and defence.

Van der Westhuizen is fast and has a useful side-step. As a full-back his touch-kicking is very sound. On the wing he does not have to wait for the ball to come to him, but is capable of fending for himself. 21 years of age, J.H. van der Westhuizen has many years of Rugby ahead of him.
