Alaska 2006

Photos from my 2006 Alaska excursion

Viewpoint for Mount McKinley. Unfortunately Mount McKinley was covered in clouds.

The Ruth river coming from the Ruth glacier of Mt McKinley.

A scale model of Mount McKinley. McKinley is one of the highest mountains in the world, rising more than 18000 feet from the surrounding base - even more than Mt Everest.

The Nenana river and gorge from the pedestrian bridge at Denali.

The picturesque village at Denali.

Rest stop on the Teklanika river bridge in Denali.

Other mountain bikers also taking a break.

A caribou bull in the Denali tundra.

Rest stop after another climb.

Two young grizzlies in the distance. Fortunately they were in the distance since I was on my bicycle.

The Alaska railroad brings tourists to Denali from Anchorage.

A black wolf in the road. This time I was in the Denali bus.

A ground squirrel stocking up for winter. These poor chaps found themselves at the bottom of the food chain in Denali - a 2000 calorie meal to just about every predator in the park.

Dall sheep live on the high slopes to escape their predators (bears and wolves).

The magnificent horns of the Dall sheep.

This ram was really posing for pictures.

Polychrome pass in Denali.

Savage river gorge. This photo was taken at midnight!

The Willow Ptarmigan is the state bird of Alaska.

Guess why it is called the Snowshoe hare?

North Pole, Alaska - the home of Santa Claus.

The 800 mile long Trans Alaska Oil pipeline going to Valdez. Note how the line zigzags to allow for thermal expansion and seismic activity.

The 12,010 feet Mount Drum is an extinct volcano.

The 14,163 feet Mount Wrangell on the other hand is still an active volcano.

Worthington glacier at the top of Thompson Pass.

The breathtaking Thompson Pass leading to Valdez.

At the bottom of Thompson Pass, the road leads through Keystone Canyon with a number of waterfalls next to the road. This is the Bridal Veil fall.

Campsite at Valdez.

The foot of Exit Glacier in the Kenai Fjords National Park.

The mystic fjords of Resurrection Bay.

Orcas playing in Resurrection bay at Seward.

Beautiful Resurrection Bay with its mountains and orcas.
